Roadburn 2010: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly Truth
To all Roadburn acolytes: We hope you are preparing for Roadburn 2010. We are in the middle of intense preparations, setting things up for what we think will be one of the best and most talked-about Roadburn festivals to date, with such acts like Triptykon, Shrinebuilder, Goatsnake, Enslaved / Shining (NO), Thorr's Hammer, Comus, Trinacria, Dream of an Opium Eater & Yob to name but a few.

To give you a brief update, we have some good news as well as some bad news, and the ugly truth.

Let’s start with the bad news. First off, it is with much reluctance that we have to announce an increase in ticket prices for Roadburn 2010.
We have tried to find ways around this, but every single one of them resulted in either compromising our vision for what Roadburn should be, or compromise the experience for you, the festivalgoer. Therefore, it will be necessary for us to increase the ticket price from €100 the last few years to €145 this year.

However, before you all revolt up in arms, some explanations, and this leads into the good news as well. First off, we received a lot of very positive feedback about some changes initiated at Roadburn 2009, such as moving the merchandise sales out of the 013 venue and into the neighboring v39 building. This provided us with a lot more breathing room in the 013, as well as allowing the dealers more room to bring in a variety of merch, music artwork and other ephemera.

Second, we did not want to compromise the laid-back atmosphere that Roadburn is renowned for by downsizing the space, which would make things uncomfortable for everyone (fans and bands alike). Additionally, we did not want to cave in to something obscene like corporate sponsorship, which would mean your having to watch your favorite drone band on the Yahoo Instant Messenger stage, or something equally demeaning to what our festival is all about.

As a result, by raising the price, we will remain 100% independent and free of being told what we have to do and how we have to do it. Roadburn is not a subsidized festival, and we receive no financial support from the government or taxpayers. Without such a price increase this year, the ugly truth is that we would not be able to continue with the festival as you know it.

Roadburn is widely recognized as one of the festivals with the best atmospheres where everyone is treated equally well and with the utmost respect. We don’t like having to raise prices, but we hope you can respect our decision and we aim to give you a great festival in return for your hard-earned money.

Now on to the good news. As part of the pricing increase, we will not only keep the v39 open for merch, but we have expanded into another venue just a minute’s walk from the 013, the Midi Theater (550 to 600 people capacity), which some of you have noticed from previous announcements.

This doesn’t mean that by adding a 4th stage we will add even more bands and increase the chance you miss the bands you want to see, but just the opposite: we will use this venue to host either a second set from a band whose performance was impossible to get into at the 013, or to provide a stark contrast musically to what’s going on at the same time on the main stage. The Midi also has a couple more spacious bars and areas where you can just relax and sit down, and it will only be open to Roadburn ticketholders, so you’re still among your special brethren.

The other good news is that due to this additional space and by maximizing the space in the 013, we will be able to increase the amount of tickets available this year from 1,750 to 2,350. We know how many of you tried desperately in vain to get a ticket for Roadburn 2009, and even we were surprised at how quickly it sold out, so hopefully this helps more of you get to see the event.
The last thing we wanted to do was move to a larger venue, as we know that a lot of the charm of Roadburn has to do with the 013 venue and its proximity to the inner city of Tilburg with its nice bars and restaurants (ok, and its coffee shops too).

We assure you that we will do everything we can to keep the Roadburn experience one of the best festival experiences you’re likely to have and to preserve the camaraderie that our little festival has become famous for.

Described by some as a seriously unbalanced, eccentric mix of NWOBHM and the Doom cults, The Lamp of Thoth will raise the spirits of dread eldritch horrors and enslave you to bang your head and worship in the name of Heavy Metal!

Texas power-trio extraordinaire DIXIE WITCH will be unleasing their ragaging stage show (featuring new guitarist JT) at Roadburn Festival’s additional afterburner event. Anyone who has not yet seen Dixie Witch live is in for quite a treat. Their old school southern/stoner vibe is infectious and undeniable, and their professionalism is highly appreciated.

Formed from the ashes of Unida and hailing from Indio, CA, desert trio HOUSE OF BROKEN PROMISES offers up an inviting combination of canyon-size riffs and fuzzed out desert grooves. Raucous and catchy!

Cette année encore ça va être la crême de la crême qui va être présente au festival. Pour peu que l'on soit un peu porté sur le doom/ sludge/ stoner et leurs amis c'est vraiment le top... Et cette année encore je vais pas pouvoir y aller!!!

145 euros c'est assez cher quand même! mais bon c'est bon c'est vrai que l'affiche est unique en son genre...
Pour moi aussi ça va être chaud d'y aller, surtout si les places partent en 10 min!!!!! fais chier c'est dommage du coup ça limite vachement le public potentiel, et empêche les gens qui comme moi pourront pas savoir en novembre ce qu'ils feront en avril!!!!
En même temps en limitant le nombre de place à ce point, l'ambiance doit en ressortir encore plus intime et géniale...

Ancestors ou la meilleure raison de croire au stoner/psyché en 2009!

DEATH ROW se rajoute.

Out of the tumultuous past of their careers together… Victor Griffin, Joe Hasselvander, and Marty Swaney are bringing Death Row back heavier than ever. But this time they’re leaving the elements of deception behind… the darker images, which to some degree blinded them, and tore them apart time and again from the inside out.

Unfortunately, this reformation of Death Row will be without Bobby Liebling. “Parts of the past have certainly left scars on some of us that have yet to heal. Until then, we move forward with best wishes & prayers for Bobby’s success in Pentagram, and in his personal life”.

What you get from this Death Row will be the same true-to-heart heaviness you expect. Songs written during the formative years by Griffin will comprise most of the set list…along with songs penned by Joe, Victor, and co-written with Bobby…such as ‘The Ghoul’ and ‘All Your Sins’ …which feature lyrics by Liebling. The fans have really been the main catalyst for this reunion, as they bring the 3-piece* Death Row machine back across the sea.
