Un parcours dans la littérature et la culture du Sud des Etats-Unis à travers un de ses plus brillants représentants, cet ouvrage explore l'univers étrange, tristement drôle et sombrement grotesque, de l'écrivain Harry Crews, considéré comme un des auteurs contemporains les plus importants, admiré par James Crumley, Sean Penn ou Stephen King, et initiateur d'une véritable littérature "redneck". Tel un cheminement dans cet environnement peuplé de monstres de foire, de culturistes, de mangeurs de voitures et de pasteurs illuminés, ce livre mène le lecteur dans un monde bizarre, comique, violent et sensible, où théologie et corporalité se mêlent dans une esthétique qui n'est pas sans rappeler les imaginations ténébreuses d'un Bosch, d'un Poe ou d'un Goya. Auteur d'une thèse et de nombreux articles sur Harry Crews, Maxime Lachaud s'est imposé comme le spécialiste français de l'écrivain.
